Ring ‌Size ‌52, ‌54, 56... What Do These Numbers Actually Mean?

Ring ‌Size ‌52, ‌54, 56... What Do These Numbers Actually Mean?

EU ring sizes 52, 54, 56: what the numbers mean (quick reference guide)

The exact measurements are in millimetres. US sizes and UK letters are close equivalents but not exact, so use them as a guide and let the mm column be the final word in case of dispute.

The rows for EU 50, 51, 55, and 59 land between standard US and UK ring sizes so their conversions are interpolated and shown with a ≈. Every US number and UK letter on this chart is a closest equivalent; only the millimetre column is exact. For ring sizes outside this chart and the full method for measuring, see our complete ring size chart and how to measure guide.

What does ring size 52 mean?

EU ring size 52 means that the inner circumference of the band is ~52 mm. That's roughly a US ring size 6 and a UK ring size L to L½. It's near the middle of the scale in this table, making it a handy peg to reference when converting between US and European ring size listings.

What does ring size 54 mean?

EU ring size 54 means that the inner circumference of the band is ~54 mm. That's roughly a US ring size 7 and a UK ring size N to N½. It's two millimetres bigger than a 52, the width of a full step in the EU sizing, enough to make a difference in how the band fits on your finger.

What does ring size 56 mean?

EU ring size 56 means that the inner circumference of the band is ~56 mm. That's roughly a US ring size 7.5 and a UK ring size O. It's one full step above a 54 and two above a 52, so if a 54 is a little tight, a 56 is the next number to try.

What is 7 cm in ring size?

7 cm is 70 mm. You don't measure finger width, you measure the circumference by wrapping a string or paper strip around it. 70 mm is roughly EU size 70, or a US ring size 13, a large size. One claim you'll see repeated online is that 7 cm is the same as a US ring size 14, and that is incorrect: 70 mm is roughly a US ring size 13, not a 14. If you meant 7 cm across the finger, no finger is that wide, so always circumference is the number to consider.

Which ring size number should you trust?

When two charts disagree, trust the millimetres. The mm figure is the actual size of the ring, while the US number and especially the UK letter are conversions that are added on and the UK letters in particular can be off slightly from one jeweller to the next. If you already own a ring that fits, measure the inner diameter and multiply by 3.14 to get the circumference to match against the circumference column above. A ring with a 16.5 mm inner diameter, for example, has a circumference of roughly 52 mm, or an EU 52.
